Kashi Vishwanath Temple: A Complete Visitor's Guide

← Back to Blog Golden spire of Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi seen from the corridor walkway

Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and the single most important religious site in Varanasi. For many pilgrims, it is the entire reason for the journey. Here is what to expect if you are visiting for the first time.

What the Temple Is

The current structure dates to 1780, built by Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, with the main spire later gilded in gold by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. In 2021, the temple was connected to the Ganga riverfront through the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, a broad pedestrian walkway lined with sandstone galleries and views of the river.

Temple Timings

The temple opens at 3 am for the Mangala Aarti and stays open through the day with short breaks for rituals, closing around 11 pm. The calmest time for a visit is early morning, before 7 am, when the queues are shortest and the atmosphere is at its most peaceful.

Getting In

Entry is free, though there are paid options for a faster Sugam Darshan queue if you prefer to skip the general line. Phones, cameras, bags, and leather items are not allowed inside and must be deposited at a locker facility near the entrance, so travel light.

What to Wear

Modest dress is expected. Shoulders and knees should be covered, and it is worth carrying a light shawl or scarf even in warmer months, since the walk from the entry gates to the sanctum takes you through open courtyards.

The Corridor Walk

Even if darshan itself is brief, budget time to walk the corridor. It links the temple directly to Lalita Ghat on the river, and the walk offers one of the best photo opportunities in the city, especially in the soft light of early morning.

Getting There from Rivera Palace

The temple is an easy fifteen to twenty minute walk from Rivera Palace along the ghats, or a short auto rickshaw ride if you would rather save your energy for the queue. Our front desk can also arrange a guide for visitors who want context on the temple's history before stepping inside.
